the case Froperly
Altho' the Japs could not feed us properly, they were kind enough to bring a piano into the camp for us !!!
of the Jardines people themselves, everyone seemed to be well, with the possible exception of 0.H. leroy, pho had a bad go of beri beri, however I m glad to say that before I left he was much better thanks to some injection of vitamin E. The Japanese kept the camp appallingly short of medical supplies, however in this case, they allowed this serum into the camp, but not before a mumber of onses had become very serious indeed.
J.J. was well, in fact in excellent forms, and it was always a tonie to meet and have a chat with him. Certainly he has lost a lot of weight, and the present fit of his tunic would har ly do justice të Favills nov.
The footgear problem wan becoming acute, and J.7. in order to save his one and only godpair of shoes, prancing round in
a pair of white, very ponnet, canvas ones, which he had procured from the so called canteon (a few details later), tos toq elegant!!!! Unfortunately, I can't remember the remarks he made about them, but on second thoughts, pertups it is just në well.
Bob Geer was his usual self, always looked immoulate, and I think I am right in saying that despite his previons tummy trouble, the rice iet was not worrying him more than anyone else.
Hopkins (Importo) know to everyone as Hoppy we na fall of life as ever. He has always been a keen volunteer, and whenever I saw him he was invariably rushing from one place to another on some job.
He managed to beg borrow or steal a glengarry, procumably on the pretext that the Scottish by were amalga ated with No. 1 Coy. I can think of ne other excuse, for I cannot remember hin defending the honour of cotland m the rugger fialt before the war, but rather anot er little country, which the hose used to tread under foct. Anyway no matter, he has grown a great big black and bushy noustache which ankee him look a fearsome sergeant, despite his diminutive stature.
Jack Hanley did great work in the cookhouse and serving out rice; not an enviable job particularly in hot weather, as Hongkong is quite humid enough without having one's head in a rice boiler half the any. He w another cheerful person to meet, he always seemed optimistic, even when the latest coolhouse rumours were about as black as they could be.
Cale Butler has shaved his head like a criminal, and if he continues to keep it shawn, I hope he juiges the time of his release, and has a little hair on his head when firat he meets his wife, for I am quite sure she won't approve; convict 99 isn't in it.
of the others I have little to tell, for they seem to be leading a more or less normal existence, as far as it is possible in a prisoner of war camp. No one in 3.. competed with my beard, which was surprising, but no doubt they will before their time is done, for I am quite convinced that the Taps are not going to bother themselves and make razor blades available for all and sundry, despite the canteen.
The canteen had just started before we left, but I am not very hopeful as to the benefit it will be to the troupa, ao fow have any money at all. Officers were being paid in military yen,
